DraftKings is preparing to join the online sports betting market in Washington, D.C. after FanDuel’s monopoly was brought to an end last week. The Boston-based operator announced on Tuesday that it has signed a deal with MLS’ D.C. United that gives it market access in the nation’s capital. It will still need to get a license and the necessary regulatory approvals before launching.

will be the 29th jurisdiction in North America in which it operates

If and when the platform eventually gets the green light to go live, it will be the 29th jurisdiction in North America in which it operates. DraftKings North America President Matt Kalish said the operator now “looks forward to expanding its presence in more than half the country.”

D.C. United President of Business Operations Danita Johnson welcomed the partnership and looks forward to introducing a more seamless experience for its fans.

FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM all went live with their platforms last week in the district. The D.C. Council passed a bill earlier this month that ended GambetDC’s exclusive hold on districtwide online sports betting. FanDuel only took over as the sole operator in the sector in April before its arrangement concluded just a few months later.

In addition to DraftKings, Fanatics Betting and Gaming has also shown interest in getting involved in Washington, D.C. once it gains access.
