The NCAA has released a statement calling on all states with legal sportsbooks to ban all forms of prop bets for college games. NCAA President Charlie Baker announced on Wednesday that he is “drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes” and the integrity of the games.

The organization plans to get in touch with state officials this week to discuss the removal of prop bets. Maryland, Vermont, and Ohio have already done so.

concerns athletes being on the receiving end of harassment from irate bettors

In addition to concerns about athletes being on the receiving end of harassment from irate bettors, Baker also hinted at other situations that have come to light in recent days.

He appears to be referencing a report from ESPN on Monday that an the Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter is under investigation for betting violations. The 24-year-old withdrew from two different games after just a few minutes of play due to alleged injury and illness. Multiple sportsbooks noticed suspicious betting activity on Porter-specific “under” prop bets, all of which won because Porter exited games early.

Baker’s comments also come in the middle of the massively popular March Madness men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments. People place more wagers on them than on any other sporting event in the US each year, with bettors set to stake an estimated $2.7bn on these games through legal sportsbooks.
