Just one week after he claimed he was quitting gambling, controversial media personality Dave Portnoy has placed a $1m bet on an upcoming college football game. The Barstool Sports founder is backing the Michigan Wolverines to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl on January 1.

The 46-year-old is a former student at Michigan and in a video on X said: “We’re going to have to kill the SEC once and for all.”

would lead to a $819,672 profit for Portnoy if his team wins

The two sides are evenly matched, with most sportsbooks selecting Michigan as the marginal favorite. DraftKings is offering odds of -122 on a Wolverines victory, which would lead to a $819,672 profit for Portnoy if his team wins.

The media personality has a track record of betting big and losing large sums. At the start of the current NFL season, he put $70,000 on the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl, with a wrist injury to quarterback Joe Burrows likely scuppering the chances of this wager.

It’s unclear just how much he lost when betting on the Buffalo Bills last week, but it did lead to him briefly retiring. He said that he sometimes quits daily when the results aren’t going his way.
