The Price is Right. An old gameshow with Bruce ‘Brucie’ Forsythe, no? Well, actually that particular gameshow was franchised out across the whole world: from Turkey, Russia and Venezuela to Vietnam, Spain and Morocco. But that’s another story for another day; we’re here to talk about the Freemantle video slot of the same title. This one’s got 5 reels, 25 configurable paylines and a top prize of 2,500.
The Price is Right is, naturally enough, based on the gameshow in which participants can win holidays, cars – all manner of juicy prizes. The colourful, cartoonish slot game features a brace of well-paying symbols, both wild and scatter icons and a unique Showcase Feature. You won’t get your mush on TV, but if you’re left standing at the end of the game, your pockets could be quite a bit heavier…
The Rules of the Game
Most of the rules will already be familiar to you if you’re a regular player of 5-reel slot games. The slot is contested on between one and 25 lines, as determined by the player; pay-outs accord with the pay-table; and line wins are multiplied by the amount staked per line. Scatter wins, for their part, are multiplied by the total amount staked, except during the Big Wheel Bonus. All symbols pay left to right except scatters, which pay wherever they lie.
The coin values supported by The Price is Right stretch from 0.01 to 25 credits. At max bet then, you can stake a hefty 650 credits per spin. Auto play is available, too: you can play on any number between one and 50. All the usual controls are situated along the bottom of the screen, to the left of the Spin button.
Big Wheel Bonus
If you’re keen to wager a little extra per spin, the small red arrow in the lower right-hand corner is the one to press. Doing so will activate the Big Wheel Bonus. You must be playing on all lines, and it’ll cost you an additional 10x your line bet, but after every spin you’ll get a chance to spin the wheel, which will award you with a multiplier or grant entry to the mini-game.
Prizes and Playing Cards
As ever, the objective is to find matching combinations of three, four or preferably five symbols. There are 12 symbols in total. They include six glittering playing card icons (9, 10, J, Q, K, A), a female TV presenter in a red dress, a fortune wheel, a sun lounger stationed beneath a palm tree, a fancy red car, a silver-haired male TV presenter in a charcoal-grey suit with red tie and a Price is Right logo.
The Forsythe-esque TV presenter performs one function in the game, and that is to stand in for others when it is needed to form winning combinations. The host appears on the central three reels. As is standard, the wild cannot replace the other special icon, which is the scatter.
One thing it can do, though, is activate the Mini Game Feature. You’ll be shown a 3x3 grid with three question marks in the central column. All you need to do is select a blank square in which to place another X, and you’ll see an item you must price correctly. Do the same again, and if at least one of your guesses was right, you’ll learn the position of the secret X. Prizes awarded are dependent on whether the X’s make a vertical or horizontal line, but the bare minimum prize is 8x the triggering bet.
The scatter symbol appears only on reels one, two and three, and is the image of the game logo. As well as winning two credits for two, and ten for three, the scatter triggers the Showcase bonus feature when all three appear. At this point, you’ll have the choice of two mini-games: Secret X or Cliff Hangers.
In the former, you’ll see a board with seven positions, in the last of which is a car. You’ll then be shown two items to be placed in the first two slots, then three, four and so on… Each time, you must place them in the right order according to price. Every correct guess wins 5x your bet, and 100x that wager is up for grabs if all guesses are correct.
